Denis’ Field Friends and Growers group
In the summer of 2020, Calderdale Council formally recognised Denis’ Field as an Asset of Community Value under law. This means that the Council recognises that Denis’ is used to further the social wellbeing and interests of the local community, and that this use should continue for at least the next five years.
The Denis’ Field Friends and Growers group has been established to provide a focus for the development of the site. We aim to improve the site for the public to enjoy, to develop the biodiversity of the site, encourage more people to use it, and work with the Council and other bodies to improve the site in line with its status as an Asset of Community Value.
Calderdale Council have now granted a license to the Denis’ Field Friends and Growers group (May 2021) and we have a Constitution accepted by Calderdale, Public Liability Insurance, a Safeguarding policy, and an interim committee of 6. We are starting to garden on the site and are holding our first official meeting in July 2021.
Examples of things we might do are
- installing raised beds for community vegetable growing & creating a compost area
- holding regular community gardening group meetings
- installing more benches, picnic tables and paths
- planting wild flowers, shrubs and trees
- organising events
- anything else to make this green space our space…at the heart of our community!
